I'm torn about this, but you should check it out anyway.

I'm up way too late.

Monday, January 14, 2008

Golly, that Sacha Baron Cohen sure is a cute one.

Aside from one notable exception, things have been good lately. I am now a productive member of society and am selling diamonds and other sparkly things downtown in the jewelry district. By the end of the month, I'll have been to Vegas, Cocoa Beach, and Grand Rapids (and maybe even San Francisco). Plans to swim with dolphins are in the works. Yes, really.
Tuesday, January 08, 2008

2a. Sis and I went to see Juno tonight - it was phenomenal.

2. I have a serious crush on Freddie Mercury.

3. Sis and I are watching Next Top Model and guess what - more chinoiserie! They're in China, faces painted pseudo-Beijing Opera style, Tyra is wearing a qipao, the whole nine yards.

Saturday, January 05, 2008

Today I discovered NPR podcasts. I am feeling enriched already. I also learned, via Garrison Keillor's The Writer's Almanac, that yesterday was Gao Xingjian's birthday. Happy birthday, buddy, even though I never got through Soul Mountain. Probably not your fault.

Yesterday I went out with Brian. It was a strange mix of enjoyable things: pizza, being friendly, flagrant violations of binary gender, generous people, walking miles by the beach during a storm, and lattes. Also, it's strange to have a college friend who I got to know in China come to my parents' house in Southern California - in a good way, of course. And it's nice to have someone around who relates to my China adventures.

In other news, I've planned the next year or so of my life, but the details will have to wait until the plans have solidified a little further. It's pretty exciting, though.
Friday, January 04, 2008

I feel a little bit jerked around. Guess you can blame some of that on a lot of Lost.

So, Mr. Obama took the Iowa caucus today. Crazy. I guess we're all coming around - me, I liked the guy, but had my heart set on Hillary. And then... either my heart wasn't too set or I'm too easily swayed after a bottle of white wine. At any rate, I picked up a voter registration form today so I'll be all set for the primaries. (Somehow I got un-registered, between moving to Michigan and then China.)

Funny, it's often mentioned that the Chinese middle class, in exchange for not having to pay taxes, willingly lets an oppressive regime stay in power. Okay, that's not funny; the funny thing is that it seems to me that's what's happening in the Republican party. Which is why if Huckabee (who won the Republican caucus tonight, if you hadn't heard) is nominated, things will be interesting: I mean, he's quite the populist. Oh no, what will the upper middle class do?

I just got a call from Grace - yes, this late. She wants me to move to Asheville and I am seriously considering it.

Wednesday, January 02, 2008

For fascinating, go here: http://www.salon.com/books/int/2006/11/27/wallace/

For entertaining, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv5zWaTEVkI

Tuesday, January 01, 2008

Happy New Year, all. My sister and I ditched a party in order to watch Lost (but we made it back in time for champagne and poppers at midnight).

Right now I'm watching the Rose Parade. This year, since the theme is "Passport to the World's Celebrations," there are a lot of floats about China - I swear, it's just 21st century chinoiserie - and it's kind of pathetic. One float featured the Fuwa, and both of the announcers made a point of saying "beijing huanying ni" over and over and over. Also, this year's Grand Marshall is Emeril Lagasse.

We're off to the movies - a New Year's Day family tradition. This year: Walk Hard. Beats some grumpy movie based on a Cormac McCarthy book.
